Cotton Scholarship Winner Shareefah Mason

Dallas, TX – Shareefah Mason, currently a Dallas ISD middle school teacher at Zumwalt Middle School, was awarded Credit Union of Texas’ William H. Cotton $20,000 scholarship. The scholarship honors William H. Cotton, a Dallas ISD and CUTX trailblazer, and is open to all DISD employees who wish to pursue a post-baccalaureate degree or certification.

Married to Imogene Cotton and father of four, William H. Cotton retired as an associate superintendent for Dallas Independent School District and as a board officer for Credit Union of Texas. Mr. “C”, as he is affectionately known, began his career at DISD in 1957 as a teacher at Colonial Elementary School. Since then, he’s served the district in many capacities and garnered countless awards.

Mason is originally from New Orleans and moved to Dallas after Hurricane Katrina. Looking for a fulfilling employment opportunity that would allow her to work with impoverished students and spend time with her husband and daughters, she applied to the Dallas ISD alternative certification program in 2005 and became a teacher in 2006. Joining the team at Zumwalt in 2015 as a part of the Accelerating Campus Excellence (ACE) initiative, she helped make unprecedented gains with students that historically struggled on standardized assessments.

Shareefah will pursue her doctoral degree in educational leadership at California Coast University.

From everyone at CUTX, Congratulations Shareefah!
